If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.

Robert Fritz

Many men who have struggled with the chaotic life often attached to prolonged substance misuse experience a sense of exclusion from society. This often leads to behaviour that results in a self-imposed isolation as the individual seeks to protect himself from situations that increase the pain that he already feels.

Often, social exclusion and isolation lead to feelings of resentment and bitterness towards society as a whole, manifesting itself in anti-social and destructive behaviour, as well as criminal activity towards the communities in which the individual lives.

Integral to successful rehabilitation is an ability and desire to function sensitively and productively in a community setting. Willowdene Farm provides residents with opportunities to confront and overcome their fears of social exclusion, and to develop an empathy with people around them; thus helping them discover their place in society.

Willowdene Farm has close links with several UK charities and organisations active in community regeneration and poverty relief, and residents are encouraged to seize opportunities to be involved in some of these projects. Many residents who have involved themselves in such work while doing their programme have reported how helpful it was to see the effects of positive action in communities. Such opportunities help residents discover purposeful and productive roles as they resettle in society following their programme.
